~3 months of waste corflute material at Nissan Casting
100% waste corflute (polypropylene) stool
Abstract
The waste problem I aim to address is the large quantities of corflute polypropylene sheets used at Nissan Casting plant going to landfill. These sheets are mainly used as barriers between aluminium castings and on the bottom of the RAV part baskets. Although polypropylene is a recyclable material, due to the China’s recent recycling ban, none of the sheets are currently recycled.
Even though recycling facilities are available just down the road from Nissan Casting(Corex Plastics Australia), each used corflute sheet is required to be cleaned of all contamination, from sources such as aluminium swarf and dirt, before it can be recycled. Sheets are often used multiple times throughout their life and due to the rough factory environment, sorting of the sheets is critical to ensure consistent material.
